Moving to Toronto: Astrocartography and Your Relocation Chart

4 min read

Toronto lies at about 43.7°N, 79.4°W. Moving there from Kyiv rotates your chart's meridian about 110° west, from Kharkiv about 116°, and from Warsaw about 100°. From Kyiv the Midheaven moves roughly 105–115 zodiac degrees, three and a half signs, so almost every planet changes house, typically by three or four houses. Toronto is also about 6.8° south of Kyiv, which adds a few degrees of Ascendant change. Any MC or IC line between roughly 81.9°W and 76.9°W passes within about 200 km of the city.

Toronto on the map

Toronto sits at about 43.7°N and 79.4°W. At that latitude one degree of longitude is about 81 km, so any MC or IC line between roughly 81.9°W and 76.9°W passes within about 200 km of the city. That band covers southern Ontario, from Lake Huron to the eastern end of Lake Ontario, and reaches south into New York State and Pennsylvania. Canada has one of the largest Ukrainian diasporas in the world, and Toronto has its biggest urban community. Many newer arrivals came through Canada's emergency travel programme after 2022.

Three and a half signs: a new chart

Every European city in this series rotates your chart by less than about 45°. Toronto rotates it by more than 100°. At that scale, the "planets near a cusp move one house forward" rule no longer applies: nearly every planet moves, typically by three or four houses.

A rough way to picture it: the part of the sky that was on your Midheaven in Kyiv sits just below the Ascendant in Toronto, and what was setting in Kyiv sits near the Toronto Midheaven. So 10th-house planets tend to land in the 1st, and 7th-house planets in the 10th. That is only a guide, since the exact angles depend on the signs involved and on latitude, but it shows why many people describe the move to Canada as becoming "a different version of themselves". The relocation chart article explains how to build and compare the two charts.

The clock gives a hint too. Toronto is seven hours behind Kyiv, which is 105°. The actual longitude shift is about 110°; as with Lisbon, always use the longitude, not the time difference.

MC and IC lines flip across the globe

Each planet has an MC line and an IC line exactly 180° apart. The meridian opposite Toronto, about 100.6°E, runs close to Bangkok and through western China and Siberia. If your astrocartography map shows, say, a Moon IC line through Bangkok, the same Moon has its MC line through Toronto. For people who have never looked at the Americas on their map, this is a quick way to spot what is waiting there.

Latitude: Toronto or the Prairies

CityLatitudeLongitudeCompared with Toronto

Ottawa45.4°N75.7°W3.7° east, 1.8° north

Calgary51.0°N114.1°W34.7° west, 7.4° north: near the latitude of Kyiv
Edmonton53.5°N113.5°W34.1° west, 9.9° north

Toronto is about 6.8° south of Kyiv, which on its own shifts the Ascendant by about 4° on average and up to about 8°. The Prairie cities, where Ukrainian communities have lived for more than a century, sit on the latitudes of Kharkiv, Kyiv and Lviv. A paran you had at home is active there, and the chart keeps a more familiar shape, only turned.

A worked example: Toronto, Montreal or Calgary

Consider Yuliia, a hypothetical client born in Lviv, who has job offers in Toronto, Montreal and Calgary. She wants her career to be visible. Suppose her Sun MC line runs at about 78°W.

On the map, Toronto is the clear match for a Sun MC line and Montreal is at the edge. Calgary has nothing from this line, but it is close to Yuliia's birth latitude, so her Calgary chart keeps its natal proportions, turned by about 138°. That is not better or worse, only different. Her choice depends on what the other lines and the two relocation charts show, and on the jobs themselves.

A short checklist for Toronto

  1. Confirm your birth time and the historical time zone of your birthplace.
  2. Note your MC and IC lines between about 83°W and 75°W, and check the opposite meridian near 100°E for the same planets.
  3. Build a Toronto relocation chart from scratch: note the new Ascendant and Midheaven signs and every planet's house.
  4. If Montreal, Ottawa or a Prairie city is an option, compare their charts; the differences in Canada are large.
  5. Weigh the result against immigration status, work, housing and community.

Key takeaways

  • From Kyiv, Toronto rotates your chart about 110°; from Kharkiv about 116°; from Lviv about 103°; from Warsaw about 100°.
  • A rotation of three and a half signs moves nearly every planet into a different house. A Toronto chart is a genuinely new reading of the same birth moment.
  • A planet's MC line through Toronto is also its IC line on the opposite meridian, near Bangkok at about 100.6°E.
  • Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg lie at the latitudes of Lviv, Kyiv and Kharkiv; Toronto and Montreal are further south.
  • Montreal is about 5.8° east of Toronto and Ottawa about 3.7°: close for a Canadian, far apart for MC and IC lines.

Common questions

Is Toronto a good city for me astrologically?

It depends on your birth chart. Check your lines within roughly 300 km of 79.4°W and build a Toronto relocation chart. With a rotation of about 110°, the Toronto chart can have a different Ascendant sign, a different Midheaven sign and different angular planets from your natal chart, so read it carefully.

How much does my chart change if I move from Kyiv to Toronto?

Toronto is about 110° of longitude west of Kyiv, so the Midheaven moves back by roughly 105–115 zodiac degrees, about three and a half signs. Almost every planet changes house, usually by three or four. Signs and aspects stay the same; only the house frame, including the Ascendant and Midheaven, is new.

Why do my lines in Canada relate to Asia?

Every planet has an MC line and an IC line exactly 180° apart in longitude. Toronto's meridian, 79.4°W, is the opposite of 100.6°E, which runs near Bangkok. So a planet whose IC line passes Bangkok has its MC line through Toronto, and vice versa.

Toronto or Calgary: what is the astrological difference?

A big one. Calgary is about 34.7° west of Toronto, more than a sign, so their Midheavens differ by about a sign and most planets are in different houses. Calgary is also about 7.4° further north, close to the latitude of Lviv and Kyiv, so its chart keeps a more familiar shape.

Toronto or Montreal: is there much difference?

Montreal is about 5.8° east of Toronto and about 1.9° further north. MC and IC lines are around 460 km apart, so a line can be strong in one city and absent in the other, and the Midheaven differs by about 6 zodiac degrees. Compare both relocation charts.
