Moving to Lisbon: Astrocartography and Your Relocation Chart

3 min read

Lisbon lies at about 38.7°N, 9.1°W, further west than any other capital of mainland Europe. Moving there from Kyiv rotates your chart's meridian about 39.7° west, from Kharkiv about 45.4°, and from Warsaw about 30.2°. From Kyiv the Midheaven moves roughly 37–43 zodiac degrees, more than a whole sign, so most planets move at least one house. Lisbon is also about 11.7° south of Kyiv, which on its own moves the Ascendant by about 7° on average. Any MC or IC line between roughly 11.4°W and 6.8°W passes within about 200 km of the city.

Lisbon on the map

Lisbon sits at about 38.7°N and 9.1°W. At that latitude one degree of longitude is about 87 km, so any MC or IC line between roughly 11.4°W and 6.8°W passes within about 200 km of the city. That band covers most of mainland Portugal, from Porto to the Algarve, and the Atlantic to the west. If you are new to reading lines, start with How to Read an Astrocartography Map.

Portugal has had a Ukrainian community since long before 2022, and Lisbon has also become a popular choice for remote workers. For most people from Ukraine it is the furthest move possible without leaving mainland Europe.

How far your chart rotates

Moving fromLongitudeShift to LisbonLatitude change
Kharkiv36.2°Eabout 45.4° west11.3° south
Dnipro35.0°Eabout 44.2° west9.7° south
Odesa30.7°Eabout 39.9° west7.8° south
Kyiv30.5°Eabout 39.7° west11.7° south
Lviv24.0°Eabout 33.2° west11.1° south
Warsaw21.0°Eabout 30.2° west13.5° south
Berlin13.4°Eabout 22.5° west13.8° south

From Kharkiv or Dnipro, the rotation is about a sign and a half. With a shift that large, you cannot assume a simple "one house forward": planets just after a cusp may move two houses, and the Ascendant may change sign. Build the chart and look. The relocation chart article shows how, and the London guide describes the typical pattern for a one-sign rotation.

The clock is not the sky

Portugal keeps Western European Time, the same clock as London. So the time difference from Kyiv is two hours, the same as for London. But the relocation chart does not use time zones. It uses the actual longitude, and Lisbon is about 9° west of London.

CityClock vs KyivLongitude shift from Kyiv
London2 hours behindabout 30.6°
Madrid1 hour behindabout 34.2°
Lisbon2 hours behindabout 39.7°

Madrid shows the same effect in reverse: its clock is only an hour behind Kyiv, but it is further west than London. If you estimate your relocation from the time difference, you will get Spain and Portugal wrong.

A worked example: Lisbon, Porto or the Algarve

Consider Oleh, a hypothetical client born in Dnipro, who works remotely and is choosing between Lisbon, Porto and Faro. He wants a calmer home life after two stressful years. Suppose his Jupiter IC line runs at about 8.3°W.

Jupiter IC12°W10°W8°W6°W4°W2°W0°LisbonPortoFaroSevilleMadridValencia
Hypothetical example: a Jupiter IC line at about 8.3°W. Porto sits about 25 km from it, Faro about 35 km and Lisbon about 75 km. Seville is about 205 km away; Madrid about 390 km.

Hypothetical example: a Jupiter IC line at about 8.3°W. Porto sits about 25 km from it, Faro about 35 km and Lisbon about 75 km. Seville is about 205 km away; Madrid about 390 km.

All three Portuguese cities sit in the strong zone. The map cannot choose between them, but latitude can help: Porto is 2.4° north of Lisbon and Faro 1.7° south, so their Ascendants differ by a degree or two. After that, Oleh's decision is about climate, rent and community.

Lines to look for near Lisbon

Line near LisbonHow it often shows up
Jupiter or Venus ICA comfortable home; a gentler pace of life
Moon MCPublic-facing work, care professions, being known locally
Neptune ICA dreamy home near the sea; also escapism
Uranus ACReinvention, freedom, restlessness
Saturn MCSlow career building; bureaucracy and responsibility

A short checklist for Lisbon

  1. Confirm your birth time and the historical time zone of your birthplace.
  2. Note your MC and IC lines between about 12°W and 6°W, and any AC or DC curves crossing Portugal.
  3. Build a Lisbon relocation chart. Check the Ascendant sign and every planet's house; with a shift over 30°, some may move two houses.
  4. If Porto or the Algarve are options, compare their charts too.
  5. Weigh the result against visas, work, housing and community.

For the big picture, see the astrocartography guide.

Key takeaways

  • From Kyiv, Lisbon rotates your chart about 39.7°; from Kharkiv about 45.4°; from Lviv about 33.2°; from Warsaw about 30.2°; from Berlin about 22.5°.
  • That is more than a sign: most planets move forward one house and some move two.
  • Lisbon keeps the same clock time as London, but it is 9° further west. Relocation follows longitude, not the time zone.
  • About 11.7° south of Kyiv, Lisbon shifts the Ascendant by up to about 12° from latitude alone and evens out the house sizes.
  • Porto and the Algarve lie within about 1.2° of Lisbon's meridian: for MC and IC lines, Portugal's west coast is one strip.

Common questions

Is Lisbon a good city for me astrologically?

It depends on your birth chart. Check your lines within roughly 300 km of 9.1°W and build a Lisbon relocation chart to see which planets sit on angles and which changed house. With a rotation this large and a big change in latitude, the Lisbon chart can look quite different from your natal one.

How much does my chart change if I move from Kyiv to Lisbon?

Lisbon is about 39.7° of longitude west of Kyiv, so the Midheaven and house cusps move back by roughly 37–43 zodiac degrees depending on the sign. That is more than one sign, so most planets move forward by one house and those just after a cusp may move two. The city is also about 11.7° further south, which changes the Ascendant further.

Lisbon and London have the same time. Is the relocation the same?

No. Time zones are political, and Portugal keeps the same clock as the UK, but Lisbon is about 9° west of London. The relocation chart uses the actual longitude, so the Lisbon chart is turned about 9° further than the London one, and it is also about 12.8° further south.

Lisbon or Porto: what is the astrological difference?

Small. Porto is only about 0.5° east of Lisbon, so MC and IC lines are about 45 km apart. It is about 2.4° further north, which changes the Ascendant by around one to two degrees on average. Practical factors, such as rent, climate and work, will decide more.

I work remotely. Does a Lisbon relocation chart still matter?

Many astrologers say yes: the relocation chart describes how your chart is expressed where you live, not where your employer is. If your career planets moved into different houses in Lisbon, you might notice changes in how you work or how visible you are, even with the same job.
