Moving to London: Astrocartography and Your Relocation Chart
4 min read
London lies at about 51.5°N, 0.1°W, almost on the prime meridian. Moving there from Kyiv rotates your chart's meridian about 30.6° west: close to a whole sign, and the same 30° as the two-hour time difference between Kyiv and London. From Kharkiv the shift is about 36.4°, from Lviv about 24.2° and from Warsaw about 21.1°. With a rotation this size most planets move forward by about one house, so the whole emphasis of the chart shifts. Any MC or IC line between roughly 3°W and 2.8°E passes within about 200 km of London.
London on the map
London sits at about 51.5°N and 0.1°W, a few kilometres from the Greenwich meridian. At that latitude one degree of longitude is about 69 km, so any MC or IC line between roughly 3°W and 2.8°E passes within about 200 km of the city. That band reaches from Bristol and Birmingham in the west to the Channel coast and the edge of Belgium in the east. If you are new to reading lines, start with How to Read an Astrocartography Map.
The UK has a large Ukrainian community, and London is its centre. For many people it is the furthest move west they have made so far.
How far your chart rotates
| Moving from | Longitude | Shift to London | Typical effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kharkiv | 36.2°E | about 36.4° west | More than a whole sign; most planets move one house, some two |
| Dnipro | 35.0°E | about 35.2° west | Same as Kharkiv |
| Odesa | 30.7°E | about 30.8° west | About a whole sign; most planets move one house |
| Kyiv | 30.5°E | about 30.6° west | Same as Odesa |
| Lviv | 24.0°E | about 24.2° west | Most of a sign; many planets change house |
| Warsaw | 21.0°E | about 21.1° west | Two thirds of a sign |
| Berlin | 13.4°E | about 13.5° west | Nearly half a sign |
One sign, one hour, one house
Kyiv keeps Eastern European Time, London keeps Greenwich Mean Time: a difference of two hours. The Earth turns 15° an hour, so two hours is 30°, and that is almost exactly the longitude between the two cities. The same moment of birth, seen from London, has a sky turned by one sign.
With equal houses, a 30° rotation would move every planet forward by exactly one house. With quadrant houses such as Placidus, house sizes vary, so most planets move one house and a few move none or two. The typical pattern looks like this:
| Natal house (Kyiv) | Often becomes (London) | What that can feel like |
|---|---|---|
| 10th: career, status | 11th: networks, community, hopes | Less focus on title, more on people and projects |
| 4th: home, roots | 5th: creativity, romance, children | Home life becomes lighter and more playful |
| 6th: work routine, health | 7th: partnership | Relationships take centre stage |
| 9th: study, travel | 10th: career | What you learnt becomes your profession |
| 12th: solitude, the hidden | 1st: self, body | A quieter part of you becomes visible |
This is a pattern, not a rule. Check your own relocation chart; the relocation chart article shows how.
A worked example: London, Manchester or Edinburgh
Consider Kateryna, a hypothetical client born in Kyiv, who wants to settle somewhere in the UK where home feels warm and beautiful. She looks at IC lines. Suppose her Venus IC line runs at about 1.5°W.
All three UK cities are in the strong-to-noticeable range. What else separates them:
- Latitude. London is about 1.1° north of Kyiv; Manchester about 3°; Edinburgh about 5.5°. Edinburgh's Ascendant can differ from Kyiv's by several degrees more than London's does.
- Rotation. Manchester and Edinburgh are 2–3° west of London, so their Midheavens are 2–3 zodiac degrees earlier. A planet right on a cusp can land in a different house.
- Life. Rent, work, schools and community vary far more than the charts.

London, Amsterdam and Paris
Amsterdam is about 5° east of London and on nearly the same latitude, so their MC and IC lines are about 350 km apart. Paris is about 2.5° east and 2.7° further south. If you are weighing London against the continent, the Amsterdam guide covers the Low Countries.
A short checklist for London
- Confirm your birth time and the historical time zone of your birthplace.
- Note your MC and IC lines between about 4°W and 4°E, and any AC or DC curves crossing southern England.
- Build a London relocation chart and list which planets moved house, and in which direction.
- If Manchester, Edinburgh or Dublin are options, compare their charts too.
- Weigh the result against visas, work, housing and the people around you.
For the big picture, see the astrocartography guide.
Key takeaways
- From Kyiv, London rotates your chart about 30.6°; from Kharkiv about 36.4°; from Lviv about 24.2°; from Warsaw about 21.1°; from Berlin about 13.5°.
- The two-hour time difference between Kyiv and London is the same 30°: one hour of clock time is 15° of longitude.
- A one-sign rotation moves most planets forward by one house: 10th-house planets tend to fall into the 11th, 4th-house planets into the 5th.
- London is only about 1.1° north of Kyiv, so the Ascendant changes mainly through rotation, not latitude.
- Manchester and Edinburgh are 2–3° west of London and further north; they differ from London more than Rotterdam differs from Amsterdam.
