Rising Sign Calculator: Find Your Ascendant
Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact minute you were born. It changes about every two hours, so the rising sign calculator needs your birth time and birthplace. Enter them and you get your ascendant, your Sun sign and your Moon sign in one result.
What is a rising sign?
Your rising sign is the point where the eastern horizon met the zodiac at the moment you were born. It is also the cusp of the first house, the house of your body, your style and the way you meet anything new. That is why people call the ascendant your "first impression": it is what others notice before they get to know your Sun or your Moon.
Because the Earth turns once a day, each sign holds the horizon for about two hours on average. Far from the equator some signs rise much faster than others, so a few minutes' difference in birth time can move your ascendant into the next sign.
How the ascendant calculator works
The calculator converts your local birth time to universal time using the time zone and daylight-saving rules that applied in your city on your birth date. From that instant and your coordinates it computes local sidereal time and the exact zodiac degree that was rising. We use Swiss Ephemeris, the same library professional astrology software relies on, so the result matches what an astrologer would calculate by hand.
How to read your result
Read your rising sign together with your Sun and Moon. A Cancer Sun with Aries rising may feel deeply protective but come across as quick and direct. A Leo Sun with Virgo rising still wants to shine, but does it quietly and with care for the details. Your ascendant also tells you your chart ruler: the planet that rules your rising sign, whose position carries extra weight in your life.
If your ascendant falls in the first or last degrees of a sign, double-check your birth time. A difference of a few minutes can place it in the neighbouring sign, and that changes your chart ruler and every house in the chart.
Rising sign, houses and the rest of your chart
The ascendant starts the house system. Once it is known, every planet in your chart can be placed in one of twelve houses, and each house describes an area of life: money, home, partnership, work, reputation. Without the rising sign a chart has planets and signs but no houses, which is why astrologers ask for your birth time first.
The next step
Your rising sign is only one of the angles in your chart. The free birth chart also shows your Midheaven, all twelve houses and the house of every planet, and you can turn it into a full personal reading whenever you want.
Frequently asked questions
You need your birth date, your exact birth time and the city you were born in. From those, the ascendant calculator works out which degree of the zodiac sat on the eastern horizon at that moment. We calculate it with Swiss Ephemeris and the historical time zone of your birthplace, including daylight saving time.
No. All twelve signs cross the horizon in a single day, so without the time there is no reliable rising sign. Check your birth certificate or hospital record, or ask a parent. Your Moon sign, by contrast, usually only needs the date.
No. Your Sun sign depends on the day of the year you were born; your rising sign depends on the hour and the place. Two people born on the same day in different cities, or a few hours apart, usually have different ascendants.
The Sun describes your identity and what drives you, the Moon your emotional needs, and the rising sign how you come across and how you start things. Read together, they are the foundation of every birth chart reading.
